Alang alang roofing, also known as thatch roofing, has been around for centuries.
This product is one of the best insulating products on the market and is imported by Serene Living from Indonesia.

It reduces the heat in summer by 10 degrees and offers warmth on cooler days.
Thatch roofing is 100% waterproof when installed by an accredited thatcher and does not require lining. It has a 15-20 year life span.

To ensure waterproofing, ideally a 35 degree pitch is recommended. This allows the rain to run off rapidly and assists with its longevity. Thatch battens should be no more than 60mm apart. Battens can be spaced up to 150mm apart if waterproofing is not required.

The grass is lashed onto bamboo battens 2.8m in length. You will need between 3-4 battens for every 1m².

The battens can be nailed or tied to rafters.

Thatch roofing once finished can be trimmed, cut sharply or left leaving a fringed effect.

Over time, the thatch exterior changes to silvery shades of grey, whilst the inside retails its original colour from when first installed.
